Aug 19: A Tribute to Joao Gilberto at JZ Club

In commemoration of the genius of Brazilian guitarist and songwriter Joao Gilberto, a group of artists team up to take to the stage for one evening. Gilberto has been credited with spreading the popularity of bossa nova around the world. Don't miss your chance to be introduced to his music this week.

Aug 21-22: Billy Drummond & Stefan Karlsson Quartet

Billy Drummond and Stefan Karlsson combine this week for an evening of stunning jazz. Both musicians are known globally, having toured extensively around the world. Drummond will take to the drum kit, while Karlsson will be on piano duty. Don’t miss it.

Aug 22: The Road Ahead of Electric Vehicles in China

Join TechNode for a Tech After Hours Series on China's auto market and the future of automakers in the country. Speakers will include Rupert Mitchell, the chief strategy officer of WM Motor, Li Zhang, a partner at Cathay Capital - Smart Energy Fund and Tu T. Le, founder of Sino Auto Insights. The event includes a keynote panel by the speakers, a panel discussion, Q&A session, as well as networking time.

Aug 22: Unravel (The Podcast) Launch Party

Unravel are launching a podcast! One of our favorite local storytelling platforms have been continuously expanding and are now giving fans the opportunity to get closer to their stories with their new podcast. Join the launch party this Thursday at Anken Air, where you can hear the pilot episode of the podcast, and get a bit boozy on Peddler’s gin, Vedett and other delightful treats.

Aug 23: Anna Karenina

One of the most iconic stories ever written, this Tolstoyan masterpiece is coming to Shanghai this month, with one show on August 23, and another in September. Telling the intertwining stories of an ensemble cast of characters, the focal point of Anna Karenina remains the titular character, who suffers ignominy and shame as a result of her divorce and infidelity.

Aug 23: Tensnake

Tensnake’s first taste of critical acclaim came with the release of 'In the End (I Want You to Cry)' on the label Running Back. Released in 2014, his debut album Glow represented a milestone in a career which had already traversed the world’s greatest dance floors, and earned Tensnake his towering reputation as one of house and disco’s leading producers.

Aug 23: Punk Rock Birthday

Join local punks Round Eye (and their friends Torturing Nurse, Poetry in Shorts and Solid Liqui) as they celebrate lead man Chachy's birthday. Round Eye is back from recording its upcoming album (produced by Mike Watt) and touring the United States with ’80s hardcore legends (MDC/Verbal Abuse) so expect things to get gnarly.

Aug 23: JJ Wakrat

JJ cut his teeth at Shanghai Comedy Bunker and is now a producer at Stand-Up Tokyo and founder of Tokyo Roast Battle, Asia’s top insult comedy league. JJ has performed in 10 countries and has opened for the likes of Neal Brennen, Mike Ward, Sam Tripoli, Tom Rhodes, Joe DeRosa and Paul Tonkinson to name just a few.

Aug 24: Back to School Scavenger Hunt

What better way to get the kids ready for school again than with a good old fashioned scavenger hunt? On August 24 from 2-7pm the Rooster is holding its annual Back to School Charity Scavenger Hunt! Your team will run across Shanghai, attempting to tick super strange items off the scavenger hunt list. Meet at the Rooster at 2pm, with the aim of starting at 3pm. Prizes have been donated by a bunch of local brands.

Aug 26: Chaos Chaos

Washington duo Chaos Chaos have cut their teeth alongside some of the best bands to come out of the American Northwest, including Sleater Kinney, Death Cab for Cutie and others. They took the Teagan and Sara route recently, by turning towards an electronified sound and haven’t looked back. Catch them this week when they come to Shanghai.
